Final Summary

Ethical Issues in my Profession
I saw some things in Chinese work places that would not be allowed in the United States. We went to a factory that seemed decrepit and conditions for the people working there did not seem like they were the best. We ate in a cafeteria that the workers ate at everyday and it was extremely hot and gross inside. We weren’t told how much these workers made but it had to be much lower than minimum wage in the United States. I also noticed a lot of the people had jacked up teeth. This is probably due to lack of efficient, affordable dentist care. I also saw an abundance of old people in manual labor jobs. Men who looked well over 60 sweeping streets with a broom made out of bamboo. Not all these things wouldn’t be allowed in the U.S. but I can’t see American people standing idly by while these things occurred. In regards to the diversity issues, Chinese people are the overwhelming 93% majority and diversity seems to be a foreign concept to most of the people. As I sat in a store with Trey Hoffman, a local came up and asked us where we were from and was astounded that we were from the same country because I was black and he was white. However, I didn’t detect any intolerance for any specific race of lifestyle, although I don’t think I was there long enough to really experience it. I think that business could make more money in China than the U.S. just because of the amount of people in China. They have 400% more people than we do and many of the people are still under developed. There is a massive growing market that is just waiting to be sold to as Chinese wealth spreads toward the more rural areas of the country. I don’t see this affecting life in the United States, however I can foresee a trend of companies moving out to China and doing a majority of its business there because there is such a large, untapped market.

Educational Breadth as Professional Development
Without traveling to other countries so see how other people live, work, and interact with each other, students will never understand how to do business in those countries. Experiencing different cultures, I believe, is something that business students must do in order to prepare themselves to interact in a global economy. The world is becoming more and more connected and countries are steadily growing and becoming wealthier which is opening up huge markets for producers to sell to. By traveling around the world and seeing how countries do business and it can benefit how a person does business in the U.S. For example, before going to China, I had no idea how the smart phone supply chain worked. Now I understand that manufacturing and engineering in China is much cheaper than other countries and also extremely efficient. In addition, it’s hard to sell to people when you don’t understand their culture. Visiting another country helps you understand their tendencies, habits, and societal norms. I don’t think that classroom courses can really adequately teach you about another culture. I think that you have to live amongst the people to truly experience and understand it. However, once you have been outside the country, taking international business classes would be extremely befenecial to learn more about how our country does business with others.

Lifelong Learning, Continuing Education as Professional Development
The speaker we had on the last day told us that he learned his most valuable information by making mistakes on the job. He explained that his failures were more valuable than his successes because they made him him a better business man. Because of the ever evolving technology of our generation, business people have to be always ready to learn and adapt to the new environment. Staying up to date helps business people stay competitive with their rivals and harnessing technology before competitors can give invaluable advantages. Technology innovation also becomes a big goal for R&D because having the latest technology can help save money and increase sales. For example, the General Manager at a factory for TE Connectivity told us that they were trying to fully automate their assembly line so that they would not have to rely on a manual work force that continues to shrink. In all aspects of life we should never be complacent with our education. We can never learn enough and being an person who is teachable and eager to learn is a trait that successful people have.

The Social Environment of Professional life
To some extent, there was a connection between people’s social and professional life. I saw many people out with their co-workers and class mates. But I don’t think that there is a very large correlation between work and their social life. The Chinese people were actually very aware of U.S. current events. As I rode on the subway I watched a news report about the riots in Baltimore. I was astonished at how much other countries cared about what goes on in the U.S. They were surprisingly aware of our politics and news. I on the other hand was horribly uninformed. I knew little about Chinese religion other than the Chinese Zodiac. I didn’t know who their leader was and after spending two weeks there, I still don’t know. I didn’t even know that Google and the social media sites were blocked in China. One thing I did know was who Mao Zedong was. But after learning about him in my American school I heard he was responsible for the deaths of millions of people and regarded him as a character that would not be revered by the citizens of his country. However, they absolutely love him in China, his portrait is on the everything from T-shirts to coffee mugs and there are large statues of him in the center of prestigious Chinese universities. The only time I really hear about Chinese current events is when there is a tragedy, like the earthquake in Nepal. I’d never even heard of the country before the earthquake. Even though I don’t, I think it is important to keep up with the world’s current events because those things can indirectly affect the U.S. and it is important to say informed.

Functioning on Multi-Disciplinary Teams
Being a minority, I frequently have to communicate with individuals with different backgrounds than me. Even on this trip I was the only minority. Having a different background doesn’t affect how I communicate with other people. When I am in a position like that I feel that I have more to offer than members of the majority because I can offer different perspectives. I very much enjoy working with people who are different from me because they have so much to offer that I wouldn’t have thought of. Working with new people benefits everyone involved. There is much to be learned when a group of people is diverse and it is a blessing more often than a curse. However, there are a few problems that may occur. Sometimes it is hard for people who have never been in your background to understand how you feel about certain things. Other times, people’s prejudices can affect how you communicate and this can prevent conducive thoughts to flow. Some people are too stubborn to realize the strength of diversity and this can cause problems for the group. These problems are minor, however, and usually effective communications are easily maintained by people who are open minded.

Day 14: The End

Today we went back on our trip to the States. It was a great trip and I learned a lot. I’m so glad that I was given this opportunity and I would encourage everyone I know to study abroad. It really changes your perspective of the world and overall makes you a more well rounded person. Although i was going to miss some parts of China and the group of friends I made on the trip, I was ready to come home. It was a 15 hour flight from Hong Kong to O’hare, but I was glad I was going straight home. On the plane i watched Gone Girl, and slept for at least 5 hours so the plane ride wasn’t too bad. I heard some people had a 7 hour layover which sounded awful. I was lucky to be going straight home. Luckily i hadn’t experienced too many intestinal problems and I hadn’t gotten any Chinese sicknesses while I was there. On the way back, customs was pretty smooth and i didn’t have any trouble. The officer welcomed me back to the country and I got picked up by my mom from the airport. I enjoyed a subway sandwich as my first lunch back home and then chicken parmesan from olive garden. In the following days I found my self very jet lagged. I kept waking up at 6 in the morning and could not fall back asleep. This would cause me to be tired all day and it was very annoying.

Day 13: Last Full Day

Posted: May 28, 2015 in Uncategorized

On the last day we were given a presentation by an retired executive. It was very informative and offered good info on what employers look for in young business people. After the presentation I had time to take a nap and after, we went to Victoria Peak, which is the top of a tall mountain in Hong Kong. It had an amazing view of the main city and of the Pacific Ocean. Theres also a mall and a variety of restaurants on the peak. We started the day pretty late so after the peak it was time for dinner. We went to an extremely fancy restaurant. So fancy that they took your napkin and folded it on your lap for you. I enjoyed a delicious skirt steak with mashed potatoes and tiramisu for dessert. After dinner we had to give the presentations of our app idea. We had the idea for a mobile health app that did many things that existing apps do but all in one. It was also offered at a lower price than other apps and it was for doctors as well as patients. Professor Gao thought this was a good idea because he said that the Chinese people trusted American medical services more than Chinese. After everyone gave their presentations the guide who had been with us since day one, Ivy, gave a presentation with pictures from every where we had been and it was really funny but also a little sad now that our trip was coming to an end.

Day 12: Modern Terminals

Today we visited the company Modern Terminals. it is a portage company that loads and unloads cargo. We were able to go up into they’re control tower and see the entire port. It was an extremely busy place with trucks driving around everywhere and cranes picking up and setting down large containers. The rains were unlike most cranes you see and they were able to move around the yard and pick up any container in their area. After we left Modern Terminals, we went to the mall for a couple hours for lunch. I went to and extremely upscale Pizza Hut and enjoyed a pizza with lobster, bacon, and pepperoni. I walked around the mall for a while until I found an arcade. Inside, I immediately saw these two kids going crazy on this one game. It’s hard to explain exactly what was going on but they were basically tapping the screen with these dots would get to the edge almost like guitar hero with no guitar. But the dots on the screen were going so fast, the kids hands were a blur. After we left the mall we went to this place called Hong Kong Science Park, which is an incubation program, to help start up companies that will stay in Hong Kong. We were given a presentation by one of the incubates about their product which was an app that allowed you to make coffee from this special coffee machine and allowed you to access recipes from baristas all around the world. It was an interesting concept but they had already made about $900,000 in sales. I was very impressed and it made me want to come up with my own business idea.

Day 11: Hong Kong

Today we left Shenzhen on a bus and went to Hong Kong. They border each other so it only took about 30 minutes to drive to the first customs checkpoint. We had to take all of our luggage off the bus and wait in line for 45 minutes before making it through. Then we were stopped at another checkpoint and had to do the same exact thing. It was really annoying and it was really hot. After that second check point it only took 30 minutes to get to our hotel. After checking in we went down to take a ferry through the Hong Kong Bay. It’s right in between the two islands offers a beautiful view of both skylines. And it was a night so the skyscrapers looked impressive. Every night at 8 they have a laser light show that goes on and it they hyped it up a lot but it really wasn’t that impressive. The street that the cruise ship was on was Hong Kong’s biggest shopping area, it was lined with every designer store you could think of. On that street we saw a Lamborghini and a Ferrari along with a couple other exotic cars. All the steering wheels were on the right side as apposed to
China. Also, there is much less smog than there is China, but the water is still not safe. That night we took the subway to Lan Kwai Fung which is where all the bars and clubs are and we hung out.

Day 10: Huawei

Posted: May 16, 2015 in Uncategorized

Today we went to visit the company Huawei. They’re headquarters was a giant campus with many modern looking buildings scattered all around. We went into a building and were given a presentation about everything Huawei had planned in the future. It was like a museum because they had lots of things on the walls and our guide would explain what was happening. It was a lot of about Internet network and 4 and 5G networks that I really didn’t understand. They had they’re phones out for demo like how they are in a retail store and I really they’re devices. The model of the phone was really pretty, but it was a little too square and the edges were too edgy for me. Still, I really liked the phone and how it looked and I wouldn’t mind getting one except that I am not a big fan of android. I really like iOS and I don’t think I would feel comfortable switching over. After the introduction to the company, we went to one of they’re cafeterias for lunch. It was probably one of the best meals I had in China. The had a buffet with many delicious items including fried bananas and salad with some outstanding thousand island dressing. The entree they brought out was a surf and turf featuring chicken and shrimp. The whole lunch was delicious but after that meal my peers and I started suffering from some serious intestinal issues. After we were given another presentation about some of Huawei’s servers and upcoming products. We concluded the visit with a PowerPoint debriefing us on the company and how it was moving toward the future. After the company visit I went to a Chinese mall call KK Mall. It was a giant 5 floor mall with plenty of designer stores and even boasted a grocery store on the ground floor. The most convenient thing about the mall was that it was connected to the subway so we easily go to and from it.

Day 9: Party World

Posted: May 16, 2015 in Uncategorized

Today we visited ASA which is a smart phone manufacturer. We learned that if a company gives them the specifications they want they can have a prototype in 60 days and can have it in mass production in 90. Once a company decides they want the business, ASA charges 30% of the price up front to buy the raw materials for the production and then the last 70% when they’re finished. Looking around the factory it looked really dingy and the cafeteria we saw seemed pretty run down. I learned that some of the workers lived they’re and it made me wonder how good the living conditions were in the factory. One of the people presenting to us told us that living here and working the boring assembly line is much better than they’re life in rural areas. After, we had a presentation from an American who was the CEO of his own company. He told us a lot of good info about the supply chain and I asked if clothing and shoe companies outsourced to China and he said absolutely. He said that the designer brands make all their stuff in China but then say it’s made in France or Italy. Being here in China has allowed me to see how Chinese manufacturing works and I can see how it can benefit companies in the U.S. After the company tour. We went to this karaoke place called party world and it was actually really nice inside. We had our room rented and they had tons of songs to choose from. I was having a blast singing even though I know I can’t sing.

Day 8: Ready to go home?

Posted: May 14, 2015 in Uncategorized

Today we traveled and it was plagued with a comedy of errors. We were supposed to leave at 6:30 but two people overslept so we were slightly late. Our professor had to go back from security to check his bag because he had some liquids in his carry on. Then when we landed in Shenzhen one of the students forgot their passport on the plane. It was so hot and humid in Shenzhen all I wanted to do was take a shower. We checked into the hotel and then we went to the museum. They had a lot of old artifacts and dead animal replicas inside. After that we went to the park that was right by the beach. It had a nice view and the cool ocean breeze made was very relaxing. When we got back I took a long shower and then we went to talk to the mall. We couldn’t find it, got annoyed by the weather and people trying to sell us stuff so we went back to the hotel. I had KFC for dinner, which was pretty good. I was surprised to see how many KFC’s they have here in China. They outnumber the Mcdonald’s and Starbucks. Today was probably the most uneventful day. I was extremely tired and the humid air made me not feel like doing anything. Also, I didn’t have a good meal all day. I just got some cheap stuff. I’m also mad that there is no iron in my hotel room so I guess I’m just going to be wearing wrinkled clothes. Finally, the Wifi is so annoying and the Internet censorship is even more annoying.

Day 7: Tonji

Posted: May 14, 2015 in Uncategorized

Today we went to the Shanghai TV tower, which is a giant needle that highlights Shanghai’s skyline. Unfortunately, we didn’t go to the top to see the view but we did go though the wax museum that was inside. The wax figures were very realistic looking and quite frankly it was disturbing. It gave me an idea about a haunted house being made of wax and some of the creatures would be real so you would get close not knowing if they were real of not. Even when I knew all the figures were wax I still had the unnerving feeling that they were going to jump out at me.

After that we went to the bund. I had already been there the previous night but it was nice to see it in the daytime. After that we went to and older part of Shanghai that was comprised of tiny alleyways that connected with each other. It felt like a maze in there and it contained lots of shops and eateries. After that we had the best meal I had in Shanghai. They had a chicken salad with spaghetti noodles in it with this really great dressing and I ate so much of it. Then they brought out these small shrimp wraps with a delicious sauce and I ate a bunch of those too. After the meal, I went with of the guys to meet up with a family friend and his son. His son went to Tongji University and they gave us a tour of the campus. It was very big and very nice. I would have liked my college campus to resemble that one.

Day 6: Mr. T

Posted: May 14, 2015 in Uncategorized

Today we went on two company visits: China Telecomm and TE Connectivity. At China Telecomm we visited their incubation building which is wear the company invests money in new startup companies. The process they have with the startups is very unique. They allow people inside their company to come up with ideas and start a business. They have 6 months to prepare the company before it is evaluated. If it fails evaluation, the entrepreneur gets his old job back. If it succeeds then they wait and see how the company does for the next two years. If it fails in the next to years the entrepreneur gets his old job back but after two years if it fails his job isn’t guaranteed but the company will give him priority if he applies again. At TE connectivity the General Manager of one of their production facilities gave us a presentation. He talked about how the turnover is very high for workers in manufacturing so the company is trying to automate most of their production line. We were given a tour of the facility and the productions lines seemed like a very organized chaos. After the company visit I went back to the Han Market to do some more shopping. I was looking to get for both my mother and girlfriend. I got my mom a Burberry Scarf and my girl a Louis Vuitton Wallet. Afterward, we ate dinner and while there our waiter gave us a good club to go to and he said to say Mr. T sent us. So we go to the club and they let us in for free once we said we was with Mr. T. At first it was just people eating and it seemed pretty boring. Once they moved the food out of the way and started playing some American club music it turned out to be a lot of fun.
